Magnesium has very good processability, that is to say, it has good casting properties. Compared with other materials, its manufacturing cost is very low. It is worth noting that although the price per kilogram of magnesium ingot is more expensive than that of aluminum and iron, the unit volume of finished product is almost the same price.

The physical and chemical characteristics of magnesium make it more suitable for die-casting large parts than aluminum. The melting latent heat per unit volume of magnesium is only 2/3 of aluminium, the specific heat is only 3/4 of aluminium, and has very low solubility of iron. These characteristics allow magnesium die castings to achieve almost the same production cost as aluminum per kg. The production costs of Mg die castings are much lower than that of aluminum if they are to be applied to the highly productive HOT RUNNER technologies (such as the latest THIXOMAT results).

2. defects in magnesium processing performance
Of course, compared with other materials, magnesium processing also has some characteristics of increasing costs. As follows, the defects of magnesium processing performance are discussed as follows
Ordinal advantage
2-1: aluminum and metal casting, magnesium die casting a higher residual waste rate (compared with the output rate of scrap aluminum)
2-2: magnesium die-casting or THIXOMOLD production equipment investment is very high. Compared with the aluminum gravity / low pressure / nitrate mold, the magnesium die casting machine is very expensive (because it needs higher clamping force and filling speed), of course, its productivity is 4 times as much as that of the former
2-3: magnesium die casting requires higher trial cost and longer trial production time, while steel parts (manufacture using simple welding technology by drawing) or plastic parts (using low-cost prototype tooling) is much simpler

4: application of magnesium

Many steel mills in Europe, America, Russia and other regions and countries use magnesium desulphurization. In 2002, 57 thousand and 300 of the total magnesium consumption in major regions of the world was spent on steel desulphurization, accounting for 15.70% of the total. In 2003, 8000 tons of magnesium were used for desulphurization of iron and steel, accounting for 15.62% of the total consumption. The characteristics of magnesium alloy can meet the requirements of noise absorption, shock absorption and radiation protection of light materials in aerospace and other high-tech fields.
